The requirements for the school pose a challenging situation: It must accommodate spaces for a wide range of activities, both planned and unpredicted, exposed and protected, open and focused, articulation and the whole, each with their own requirements and thresholds. It’s quite accessible by public transportation. Currently, the site is a playground with the size of 45m×30m. A garage and power station were built underneath. The site is very much defined by this existing outline. Which is quite challenging in the same time in this limited area. So the solution should be compact and efficient enough. The height difference of area is quite obvious. It rises up from right to the left side. There are no angles and walls in this space and the shape will never be clear from the inside. The ground follows the changing of ceiling up and down, leaving a certain parallel space in between. A single landscape has no object or place to refer to. Responding to the single landscape through the specificity and autonomy of the house was the initial interest of the project. The living room and kitchen are open, facing the courtyard. The rooms are serves as an extension of the courtyard where people can organize activities, making daily and non-daily completely opposite. The surrounding wall forms a boundary and 'occupies' a circular courtyard. There is no artificial trace on the gound. You can't dominate this 'space' but only be part of it. These different scales and types of space not only express a certain "individual consciousness" but also imply the indivisibility of the whole through occlusion. With the respect of the terrain of the old building, the new installation is retreated to become the background of the old structure so as not to disturb the continuity of the foundation and also to completely separate the present from the past. People enter the building through a suspended bridge and walk down a set of stairs that seem not to touch the ground at any point. Railings are only provided around the ruins to enable visits in different level. Through the passageway suspended from the roof, there are three exhibition halls arranged along the way. A café is placed on the central axis between two exhibition halls at the lowest height in the cisterns. A bookstore and souvenir is placed at the end of the exhibition path. The auditorium, office and other spaces are arranged close to the entrance. It was realized during the Augustan Age. During the war with Pompeius, in fact, the son of Caesar ordered the construction of a harbour complex in the west side of Puteoli (Pozzuoli), named Portus Julius, which became the headquarter of the western Mediterranean war fleet. In order to feed with water the militar base, Augustus decided to build an aqueduct from the Serino mountain to the Lake Miseno, which had, as terminal point of the path, a reservoir, today well known as Piscina Mirabilis. Our proposal was trying to reuse this space as a Contemporary Art Museum. The requirements for the new museum pose a challenging situation: It must accommodate spaces for a certain range of functions for the modern use inside the cistern space. The site environment is quiet and moving, which has formed the trend of the canal garden. The most concise architectural elements are put into the environment, combined with the characteristics of the forest canal, so as to create different use scenes that are expected, observable, livable and swimable. The rules of modern gardens are a kind of artificial system that values traditions, while gardening by ancient methods originated from the philosophical tradition of "there is no way to build gardens". We hope that while inheriting the traditional wooden construction , through the inlaid overlapping between the architectural components, defining trajectories that blend into the landscape. The design uses the bridge as the "Main Beam", placed on the base of the steps, holding up three "Secondary Beams" to extend outward and supporting them by natural elements "Stone Pillars", forming "One Pavilion, one Bridge and One Kiosk " scattered in the natural landscape . Most recently He starts his own practice parallel with freelance work for Jensen & Skodvin. He has been teaching and a visiting critic at the Oslo School of Architecture.
